-
- : VisCorp bought into a proprietary system, they need to maintain this
- : proprietary for a couple of reasons:
- : -If you buy off the shelf technology from different vendors, you are
- : at their mercy when it comes to upgrades, pricing, etc.. When its
- : you who owns the technology, you command your own destiny in those
- : areas as well as the potential of larger profit margins; after all
- : you own the technology.
-
- If you roll your own chips you have to pay for that and that ends up
- passed on to the consumer. It won't fly in a competitive
- environment. If you have to do it for your new product anyway it
- might make sense to include it with the amiga but the amiga will not
- prosper without better than video specs. I would much rather svga
- on the motherboard than a super AGA like chipset.
-
- : -You need a custom chipset for what VisCorp is proposing.
-
- No, you need a video capable chipset.
-
- : -The development platform is an Amiga. Why reinvent the wheel and create
- : a new system/ OS when the tools that you need you just purchased.
-
- Why reinvent the wheel indeed, why not use standard chips instead of
- making your own.
-
- : -The OS will continue to improve , grow, and be ported. The 68000
- : series processor is at an end with the 060. All technology companies,
- : which is what VisCorp is, know that advances are a part of the business.
-
- The OS will continue in the same direction you mean. Backwards
- compatibility is what makes the PC suck, it is only the good start
- the amiga os had that has allowed for as much backwards compatibilty
- as we now have, but that won't last forever.
-
- : If you dont continue to upgrade and improve you die; it happened to C=.
-
- You can only add for so long, then you have to do spring cleaning or
- you end up with a mess.
-
- : > Oh, I don't really think they will drop all amiga PC projects but I am
- : > concerned with how they will change the specs to be in line with their set
- : > top technology and the delays that will cause.
-
- : The specs will change, in the future that is, and they will get better
-
- What are we talking 1-2 years?
-
- : not worse. Look at the net technologies out there now, you need a custom chipset
- : to make the best of what is out there. VRML, JAVA, Real Audio, CUseeMe, these tecnologies
- : cry out for custom support in the way of hardware. Internet games are also a goal
- : of the company for their ITV box. This equates to hardware custom chipset at least on
- : par with todays highend gaming consoles.
-
- Talking to cross purposes here, custom chips in amiga terms means AGA etc.
-
- : This acquisition is a marrige made in heaven were the Amiga is concerned. This is
- : a synergistic event as far as Im concerned.
-
- Oh, it could have its good points, if done right, but making better AGA
- compatible chipsets is not the way to go.
